Why I Love Dachshunds

Of all the animals I have ever known dachshunds are by far the smartest, sweetest, and most loyal. A small dog, dachshunds normally go running around the house knocking over furniture. They are perfectly sized for napping in your lap or riding in the car. They are small, but have a big bark and are territorial and loyal, which means they are a friendly custom security system which costs no electricity and runs 24/7. Dachshunds come in three coat types, with my favorite being the short haired, or "smooth." I like the short haired variety because they are easier to keep clean and seem to shed less. They are very smart and sometimes mischevious, which adds to their unique personality and makes them a source of constant entertainment. These are some of the good things that come with owning a dachshund.

There are some concerns which need to be addressed before you make the decision to get a dachshund. Because of their long shape they have backs that are very prone to injury. Dachshunds should not be allowed to jump up and down on furniture, beds, or into/out of vehicles, as the landing can rupture discs in their back and cause severe pain and/or paralysis. They have a tendancy to get fat, so it is important that you watch what they eat and give them exercise. A fat dachshund is not healthy at all, and is more prone to back injuries. Dachshunds also are very territorial and aren't afraid to let anyone walking near their territory know that. Proper training will cut down on the barking, but they are prone to being vocal nonetheless.

I love dachshunds, and you have read this article this far so you must be a dachshund lover too. Please post a comment by clicking on the "comment" button below and tell everyone why you love dachshunds, or share some training tips, photos, and/or stories about your long furry little friends.

There are millions of animals that are euthanized (killed) just in the United States every year. Please consider adoption before purchasing any animal. I have had nothing but unbelievable success with animal adoption.
